Sunrise Wind project is a 924 MW offshore wind farm that will deliver green energy to 600,000 homes.
As part of the clean energy initiative of New York state, the Sunrise Wind project will be one of many offshore wind projects under development near the state’s coastlines.
The Sunrise Wind project is instrumental to New York’s goal of 9,000 MW installed wind energy capacity by 2035.
Where is the Sunrise Wind project?
The offshore wind farm is 30 miles away east of Montauk Point in the Atlantic Sea. Martha’s Vineyard is also 18.9 miles north of the wind farm. The area is also 16 miles from Block Island, the first offshore wind farm in the United States.
What are the components of the wind farm?
The Sunrise Wind farm will have one offshore converter station and one onshore.
The project will also be the first offshore wind project to use HVDC transmission technology in the USA. 7 European offshore wind farms support over 200 MW capacity with HVDC transmission lines.
The HVDC lines will land in Brookhaven on Long Island, New York. From there, The transmission lines will travel to the Holbrook Substation and connect to the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA).
When is the first power of the wind farm?
The wind farm is expected to deliver its first power by 2024 and be fully operational by 2025.
How large is the Sunrise Wind project?
The size of the area is 86,823 acres or 351 square kilometers.
How much power will the Sunrise Wind project produce?
Sunrise Wind Farm will generate up to 924 MW of clean, renewable energy for the state of New York. This offshore wind energy is enough to power 600,000 homes.
Who owns the Sunrise Wind project?
The renewable energy project is a joint venture between Ørsted and Eversource Energy. Sunrise Wind combines the offshore expertise of Ørsted as a global offshore wind leader and the transmission capabilities of Eversource.
Ørsted and Eversource Energy’s partnership began in 2016 to develop offshore wind projects in the northeast United States. Their shared portfolio includes Sunrise Wind, South fork Wind, and Revolution Wind Farm. Their joint venture portfolio has reached 4,000 MW in development.
What are the economic benefits of the Sunrise Wind project?
The company will invest $10 million to train New Yorkers and prepare them for working in the offshore wind project. Local community colleges and labor unions will use the funds to build a National Offshore Wind Training Center in Suffolk County.
$1 million will also be invested in the workforce development of upstate New Yorkers. The construction is also estimated to produce 800 jobs until completion, which is part of the $408 million direct investment in New York.
As Orsted and Eversource signed a 2019 agreement with Nexans to purchase subsea cables for its northeast projects, Nexans got the investment it needed to start producing subsea cables. The joint venture also enabled the expansion of Nexans’ factory in South Carolina. The facility expansion will create 160 local jobs.
A maintenance hub at Port Jefferson will also hire locally and contribute to the economy.
How many turbines does Sunrise Wind farm have?
The wind farm will have up to 122 offshore wind turbines.
Who produces the turbines?
Siemens Gamesa will manufacture the turbines, and the agreed model is SG 8.0-167 DD with an installed capacity of 8 MW. The contract is subject to conditions and valid as of July 2022.
