The South Fork Wind project is New York’s first offshore wind farm, which will connect to East Hampton’s local grid. This project is a crucial part of developing the US Offshore Wind industry.
The wind farm will add 132 MW of clean electricity to address the energy needs of East Hampton and deliver enough clean energy for 70,000 homes.
The project also features the first-ever US-made offshore wind farm substation. Kiewit Offshore Services will manufacture the substation near Corpus Christi, Texas.

EPA granted a permit from the construction and operations plan of Orsted in January 2022. The construction began in February 2022. The project’s construction is underway, and the South Fork Wind Farm will deliver power by the latter part of 2023.
Where is the South Fork Wind farm?
South Fork Wind farm is in the Atlantic Ocean, south of Revolution Wind Farm. It is located 19 miles southeast of Block Island in Rhode Island.
The wind farm is 35 miles east of Montauk Point, Long Island, New York.
East Hampton substation will be the receiving end of the power generation from the South Fork offshore wind farm. New York will utilize an underground transmission line for the project.
Who owns the South Fork Wind farm?
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) awarded Deepwater Wind a lease in 2013. Orsted acquired Deepwater Wind in 2019.
The project was also initially awarded to Deepwater Wind after being found to be the cost-effective solution to the needs of South Fork. The award was based on submissions to LIPA and PSEG Long Island’s request for proposals.
