Offshore wind farms are relatively new in the USA, and wind energy as an industry is nascent on the east coast. To help states meet their green energy goals, Ørsted has partnered with Eversource to build offshore wind farms that can boost state and local economies. Revolution Wind Farm is one of these keystone projects.

As the world leader in offshore wind farms, Ørsted brings data and offshore services to the US east coast. Meanwhile, Eversource has 100 years of electricity distribution experience to complement the wind energy expertise of Ørsted.

Revolution Offshore Wind Farm is 15 miles off the coast of Rhode Island, is a 50/50 joint venture of Orsted and Eversource. Revolution wind has 65 wind turbines covering the 97,500 acre lease area. Revolution offshore wind is possible due to a $40 million investment in Rhode Island infrastructure

How much power will the wind farm produce?

The wind farm will produce 704 MW, split between two adjacent states. Connecticut receives 304 M, and 400 MW goes to Rhode Island.

Revolution Wind Turbines

Revolution offshore wind farm has 65 turbines, each with an 11 megawatt capacity factor, for a total of 715 megawatts

This project will use 65 turbines, each from Siemens Gamesa, and will be 11 MW each. The total project will have a 715 MW nameplate capacity of clean, renewable wind power.

What are the economic benefits of the wind farm?

The New London State Pier benefits from local construction work following the $77.5 million investment from the wind farm.

Furthermore, Ørsted and Eversource will sign a 10-year lease to be the long-term tenant of the port. The joint venture will pay $2 million annual fees to Connecticut Port Authority (CPA). Redevelopment of the State Pier is expected to be completed in Q1 2023.

South Fork Wind farm and Sunrise Wind Farm projects will also use the New London State Pier. The deal is also not exclusive, as other offshore wind developers may use the port when not used by Ørsted and Evermore.

Additionally, the joint venture will also invest $40 million in the improvement of the port infrastructure of the Rhode Island coast.

How large is the Revolution Wind farm?

The size of the lease area of the project (OCS-A-0486) is 97,500 acres or 394 square kilometers.

Where is Revolution Wind?

Revolution Offshore Wind Farm is roughly midway between Block Island Wind Farm in Rhode Island and Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. The wind farm’s location is about 15 miles south of the Rhode Island coast and 32 miles southeast of the coast of Connecticut.

It is located near Sunrise Wind Farm and South Fork Wind Farm, developed by Ørsted and Eversource.

Who owns Revolution Wind?

Revolution Wind farm is a 50:50 joint venture between Ørsted and Eversource.

Initially owned by Deepwater Wind, the ownership of lease area OCS-A-0486 was transferred to Orsted when it purchased Deepwater wind in 2018.

When is the first power of the Revolution Wind farm?

Construction will begin in 2023. It is estimated to be fully operational by 2025. Additional information will be available after the construction and operations plan are accomplished by Q2 of 2023.
