The second great Energy Transition is upon us!
This is a blog dedicated to helping YOU understand the global energy space. Most energy blogs are written by one of three people: Maximalists who believe one type of energy source will power the entire world and have no long term view, Sell Side Analysts who are 20-something year olds who never worked in the industry writing to fit their client’s narrative, and Influencers who think electricity comes from “the wall” (yes, we used to ask and get this answer!!). Ultimately, we want to make this the one stop shop to help you the reader become proficient enough to talk about all aspects of global energy markets and the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Most of the industry knowledge is closely held and it is near impossible to find good answers from unbiased sources. We are changing that.
Topics Covered
Sources of Energy. We think it is very important to understand the different energy sources, how they are captured, where we store them, and how much potential they have. Also, how these sources of energy have contributed to society over time and how they are used today. We will also publish a guide on different technologies that are used to capture the different energy sources. Some may be more legacy (like burning wood) and some may be more cutting edge (like floating wind turbines).
Global Energy Overview. You must understand the macro environment to fully grasp the scale of global energy demand. We will get into how much energy is consumed today by source, how this compares to different periods of time, and how the first energy transition from biomass to hydrocarbons has propelled advancements in the world over the last 100 years (you wouldn’t be reading this on a computer if oil were never discovered!!). No forecast is perfect, so we will try to give our best look at what future energy demand will look like and how much more energy is required to keep advancing society.
Energy Transition. We will explain how we see the second great energy transition from hydrocarbons to more renewable sources playing out, what gaps we need to fill to get there, and how you the reader can contribute! We believe the energy transition is happening, and how we will exactly get there is still unknown. There are many different competing technologies trying to get a piece of the ever growing pie and we will give our opinions on them. Big questions right now – what is the total cost of renewable energy, how do we promote adoption of lower emission sources, and how do we most effectively store electricity.
