Momentum Wind will deliver 808 MW of offshore wind power to Maryland when it is turned on in 2026. Momentum Wind complements the 300 MW of offshore wind development in the same lease area, leading to a total of 1.1 GW installed capacity when both projects go online.

Because offshore wind energy is new in the state, the investment of the project developer into supply chain hubs will significantly help meet Maryland’s renewable energy targets. The state of Maryland granted Offshore Renewable Energy Credits (OREC) to the project in December 2021, helping to bring offshore wind power to the community.

Momentum offshore wind farm will deliver first power in 2026. Momentum wind will consist of 55 turbines and a combined capacity factor of 808 megawatts of renewable wind power

What are the economic benefits of the Momentum Wind project?

The project will revitalize Baltimore County through a proposed investment in an offshore wind manufacturing facility. The proposed Sparrows Point steel fabrication facility can reach up to $150 million in incremental investment.

The new steel fabrication facility can potentially be one of the largest staging facilities for the American offshore wind industry’s turbines, nacelles, foundations, and blades.

The fabrication facility will also act as an offshore wind deployment hub for Momentum Wind and other wind farms on the east coast. This investment and strategic move will help in expanding the offshore wind industry.

Furthermore, the goal of US Wind is for a permanent facility that can serve all US markets, a potential $100 billion industry.

According to US Wind estimates, the economic benefit for Maryland’s economy is up to $2.9 Billion in total economic output over 20 years.

Because the offshore wind supply chain is beginning, the facility is one of the first to manufacture wind components and offshore wind foundations. The proximity to wind farms will speed up project timelines and lower costs.

Where is the Momentum Wind Farm?

Momentum offshore wind is off the coast of Maryland

The project is 11 miles off Maryland’s coast.

How large is the Momentum Wind farm?

The lease area of Momentum Wind is adjoined with Marwin Wind farm, for a total of 80,000 acres of federal waters.

Who owns Momentum Wind?

Renexia SpA, a subsidiary of Italian manufacturing giant Toto SpA, owns US Wind.

Toto SpA has extensive experience in manufacturing in transportation, tunneling, aviation, and energy sectors.

When is the first power of Momentum Wind?

The offshore wind project is set to deliver electricity to the grid in 2026.

How much MW will the Momentum Wind deliver?

The offshore wind power of the farm is 808 MW. There are 55 proposed turbines for the project.

Expansion Plans

The remaining future potential capacity of the lease area is approximately 600 MW. There are no planned expansions as of 2022.
